The sun, beach and bikinis more often comes to mind when one thinks of Miami in Florida, United States. However, I have found that there is more to the city than its powder sand. It is also a melting-pot of affluent international artists, art dealers, curators and incredibly talented graffiti artists.
Some of the most eclectic and inspiring collection of wall art rests in the heart of Miami, some 10 minutes drive from South Beach in the funky neighbourhood called the Wynwood Art District. Here, elaborate art draped over the entire length of a building brings to life the crumbling walls of this concrete jungle. Every electric pole, wall or gate is a work of art. Many are simply beautiful eye candy, while some others seem to express a deeper message from the artist.
Driving around in a car and hopping off to admire the work is the best way to view this dynamic outdoor gallery. Not only is the neighbourhood famous amongst the locals for its funky murals, but is home to more than 70 world class galleries, museums and collections. On a sunny day in Miami, Wynwood Art District is certainly well worth the visit in between pina coladas!
